Warm cafe interior with wooden tables, hanging lights and a coffee counter
Coffee bar & morning bakery

Slow coffee, bread from the morning bake.

Basalt Grove is a neighbourhood cafe for unhurried mornings: small-batch espresso, loaves still warm from the oven, and a short lunch that changes with the season.

We roast in small batches, bake before sunrise and keep the menu short — so everything on it is worth ordering twice.

Our story

Built around the oven and the grinder.

Basalt Grove began with two things we wanted nearby: coffee that tastes like where it came from, and bread with a proper crust. Everything else on the menu grew out of those two habits.

  • Roasted in small batchesBeans are rested a few days before they reach the grinder, so every cup has room to open up.
  • Long, slow doughOur loaves ferment overnight for flavour and a crumb that keeps well through the week.
  • Seasonal, not endlessA short menu lets us change with the produce instead of stocking everything all year.

Good to know

Questions we often hear.

Do you have plant-based and gluten-free options?

Yes. Oat milk is always free, and each day's board marks plant-based bakes and lunch dishes. We bake with flour on site, so we describe items as gluten-aware rather than gluten-free.

Can I reserve a regular table?

Everyday tables are walk-in only. For groups of six or more, use the gathering enquiry and we will hold the long table if it is free.

Can I pre-order loaves or pastries?

Whole loaves and pastry trays can be set aside with a day's notice — mention it in the enquiry form and collect in the morning.

Do you sell your coffee beans?

Bags of the house blend and the current single origin are on the shelf by the counter, and we are happy to grind for your brewer.
